Personal Communication Devices Policy

We are excited to welcome you to the 2026-2027 school year. In order to create and maintain a safe, welcoming, and productive learning environment, this school year, Denver Public Schools (DPS) is implementing a policy to limit the use of Personal Communication Devices (PCDs) during the school day. 

MHS students will be required to either place their PCDs into a phone pocket organizer before entering the classroom, or into their backpack, for the duration of class each period. Students will not be allowed to use or retrieve their PCDs when leaving the classroom for bathroom breaks, nurse visits, etc. Students will be able to retrieve their PCDs at the end of class. 

If there is an emergency and you need to contact your student during class time, please call the Main Office and they will contact, and connect you with your student. 

-Personal Communication Devices or PCDs include all cellphones, smart watches or wearables, smart glasses, wireless earbuds and earphones, personally owned tablets and laptops or any personally-owned portable electronic communication devices. 

-How does this policy affect MHS students? All MHS students will be required to place their Personal Communication Devices (PCDs) in a phone pocket organizer, or their backpack, before the start of class. They won’t be able to retrieve it until the end of class, even during bathroom breaks. 

-If there is an emergency, how can I contact my student? Just call the MHS Main Office at 720-423-5900, tell them your students name and we will make sure you are connected with them!

Con el fin de crear y mantener un entorno de aprendizaje seguro, acogedor y productivo, este año escolar las Escuelas Públicas de Denver (DPS) están implementando una política para limitar el uso de dispositivos de comunicación personal (PCD, por sus siglas en inglés) durante la jornada escolar.

Se requerirá que los estudiantes de MHS guarden sus dispositivos de comunicación personal (PCD) en un organizador de bolsillo para teléfonos o en su mochila durante toda la clase en cada periodo. No se permitirá a los estudiantes usar ni recuperar sus dispositivos al salir del aula para ir al baño, visitar a la enfermera, etc. Podrán recuperar sus dispositivos al finalizar la clase.

Si surge una emergencia y necesita comunicarse con su estudiante durante el horario de clases, por favor llame a la oficina principal; allí se comunicarán con su estudiante y le pondrán en contacto con él o ella.

-Los dispositivos de comunicación personal (PCD) incluyen: teléfonos celulares, relojes inteligentes o dispositivos vestibles (wearables), gafas inteligentes, auriculares y audífonos inalámbricos, tabletas y computadoras portátiles de propiedad personal, o cualquier dispositivo electrónico portátil de comunicación de propiedad personal.

-¿Cómo afecta esta política a los estudiantes de MHS? Todos los estudiantes de MHS deberán guardar sus dispositivos de comunicación personal (PCD) en un organizador de bolsillo para teléfonos o en su mochila antes de que comience la clase. No podrán recuperarlos hasta que termine la clase, ni siquiera durante las pausas para ir al baño.

How will Montbello High School manage collection and storage of PCDs?

  • PCDs must be turned off and stored in the phone pocket organizer located in each classroom or student’s backpack upon entering the classroom.

Who decides where my student stores their device(s)?

  • Teachers can request input from students, but the ultimate decision rests with the teacher.
  • If devices are stored in the student’s backpack, the backpack will remain in front of the classroom.

When can my students use their PCDs? 

  • PCDs can only be used during school approved non-instructional times (passing periods, lunchtime) as long as this does not violate Prohibited Conducts outlined in this document. 

What if I need to contact my student during school hours? 

  • If you need to talk to your student during school hours, you can call our Main Office at 720-423-5900-Extension -35996 

How can I communicate with my student during a school emergency?

  • This policy shall not prevent or impede the delivery of emergency notifications. The District is responsible for ensuring that emergency notifications reach parents and guardians.  

What happens if students violate the policy?

What if I/my student disagrees with this policy?

  • We are always open to listening and engaging with you in collaborative, solution-oriented conversations that support our distraction-free learning environment. 
  • If you anticipate that your student will struggle meeting the expectations of this policy, you always have the option to keep their PCDs at home, or work with your grade-level administrators to address your concerns.  

Preguntas frecuentes sobre los dispositivos de comunicación personal (PCD) de MHS:

¿Cómo gestionará Montbello High School la recolección y el almacenamiento de los PCD?

  • Los PCD deben apagarse y guardarse en el organizador de bolsillo para teléfonos ubicado en cada aula, o bien en la mochila del estudiante, al entrar al salón de clases.

¿Quién decide dónde guarda mi estudiante su(s) dispositivo(s)?

  • Los maestros pueden pedir la opinión de los estudiantes, pero la decisión final recae en el maestro.

¿Cuándo pueden mis estudiantes usar sus PCD?

  • Los PCD solo pueden utilizarse durante los momentos no lectivos aprobados por la escuela (tiempos de transición entre clases, hora del almuerzo), siempre y cuando esto no infrinja las conductas prohibidas descritas en este documento.

¿Qué sucede si necesito comunicarme con mi estudiante durante el horario escolar?

  • Si necesita hablar con su estudiante durante el horario escolar, puede llamar a nuestra oficina principal al 720-423-5900, extensión 35996.

¿Cómo puedo comunicarme con mi estudiante durante una emergencia escolar?

  • Esta política no impedirá ni obstaculizará la entrega de notificaciones de emergencia. El Distrito es responsable de garantizar que las notificaciones de emergencia lleguen a los padres y tutores.

¿Qué sucede si los estudiantes infringen la política?

¿Qué sucede si yo o mi estudiante no estamos de acuerdo con esta política?

  • Siempre estamos abiertos a escucharle y a mantener conversaciones colaborativas y orientadas a soluciones que respalden nuestro entorno de aprendizaje libre de distracciones.

Si prevé que a su estudiante le resultará difícil cumplir con las expectativas de esta política, siempre tiene la opción de dejar sus PCD en casa o de colaborar con los administradores de su nivel de grado para abordar sus inquietudes.
